A Place Beyond Fear

Correct Me If I’m Wrong

A documentary about a family’s attempt to rid a male heir of deviation from expectations.

Hao Zhou

Hailing from southwest China, Hao Zhou explores queer and feminist stories in peripheral spaces. The documentary will follow a family as its members confront their sole male heir’s deviation from expectations.

To challenge their contempt, the heir indulges his family’s wish to rid him of everything they hate and fear.

In their mountainous town, the family exposes the heir to a series of mystical interventions to transform his body, mind, spirit, and fate. As this arduous pursuit exposes tensions and traumas amid all participants, will the family end up being the ones who are transformed?

In November 2024, Hao Zhou and his mentor, documentarist Tomer Heymann, met in Amsterdam for a condensed work-stay, where they fine-tuned the film’s edit and networked during the IDFA film festival. A work-in-progress version of the film was screened at the 2025 International Film Festival Rotterdam in early February ahead of the film’s international premiere at the Forecast Festival.
