Forecast 9: Forum Recap

A Look Back at the 9th Forecast Forum

Forecast introduced its ninth edition with the Forecast Forum in early August, 2024. During three action-packed days of showcases and performances, creative minds from all over the world presented their project ideas, concluding a phase of workshopping with their respective mentors.

The Forum opened with the field Open Minded Body, mentored by
choreographer Alice Ripoll, and included solo dance performances by Mehdi Dahkan, Patience Ebute, and Koloto Siraji. Filmmakers Anna Homan, Sharon Ryba-Kahn, and Hao Zhou—working with documentary filmmaker Tomer Heymann as their mentor in the field A Place Beyond Fear—showed teasers for their forthcoming film projects.

On day two, visitors experienced presentations by Sharbendu De, Mei Liu, and Philadelphia Makwakwa—three artists working with photographer Lieko Shiga  in the field Images Invisible to Our Naked Eye. The evening continued with music and sound performances by Shasha Chen, Camil Navarro, and Inés Terra in the field Expanding Your Voice, mentored by composer and performer Ute Wassermann.

The third and final day of the Forum included a rich program by speculative designers Justin Bean, Johanna Seelemann, and Mali Weil in the field Paradoxical Imaginings: Ideas and Objects lead by designer Fiona Raby. This was followed by performances and screenings by artists Léllé Demertzi, Tra Nguyen, and Mudassir Sheikh, who presented works in the field Shapes of the Unknown, mentored by artist Theo Eshetu.

At the Forum’s conclusion, each mentor chose one mentee. These six projects will be accompanied to completion and shared with the public at the Forecast Festival, March 14-15, 2025. The monthslong mentoring process offers a space in which both parties can experiment, exchange, and push their concepts in new directions.
