Lulu Obermayer

Opera: Uprooted, Upended, Unhinged

“An anthropological exploration of inherited cultural legacies to unravel and reimagine.”

Lulu Obermayer’s work spans opera, theater, performance art, dramaturgy, and choreography. Her practice intertwines historical facts and theatrical anecdotes, placing both real and fictional female voices at the forefront to examine questions of agency and representation on stage. Engaging deeply with the European cultural canon, Obermayer uncovers latent potential within female characters, reimagines established narratives, and amplifies perspectives that have often been overlooked or silenced. “I describe my approach as an anthropological exploration of the cultural contexts and legacies I’ve inherited, which I aim to unravel and reimagine through my work,” says Obermayer.

Obermayer’s work includes a trilogy of solos inspired by Puccini operas which explore the dynamic interplay between gender and landscape. In 2020, Obermayer premiered her first ensemble piece, L’Opra Fatale, commissioned by Steirischer Herbst, which delves into the motif of female murderers in opera. That same year, she was nominated for the Caroline Neuber Award and a Forecast Mentorship. Obermayer is the first Forecast graduate to return to this program as a mentor.

Obermayer’s performances include the eight-hour series Frauenliebe und Leben (2022), featuring eight female singers aged eighteen to seventy and based on Robert Schumann’s song cycle. Her works have been showcased at international venues and festivals, including CCA (Glasgow); Junge Oper im Nord and Theater Rampe (Stuttgart); Theater Neumarkt (Zurich); DE SINGEL (Antwerp); Sophiensæle and HAU2 (Berlin); Steirischer Herbst (Graz); Münchner Kammerspiele and HochX Theater  (Munich); Highways Performance Space (Los Angeles); and Bâtard Festival at Beursschouwburg (Brussels), among others. Between 2022 and 2023, she was a member of the Freischwimmen network. In January 2025, Obermayer will premiere a new work, Rachel und ich, followed by a commission, in May 2025, for Musikinstallationen in Nuremberg and a new piece adapting the operas Suor Angelica and Dialogues des Carmélites, exploring nuns and monastic life.

“I am deeply honored to be invited as the first Forecast alum to transition into the role of Mentor for Forecast 10. This opportunity holds great personal significance for me, and I am excited to support my mentees as they embark on their individual artistic journeys,” Obermayer says. She seeks candidates who merge the classical with the contemporary and engage with live formats—whether working solo or blending various artistic mediums—while critically interrogating cultural canons and traditions. “I am particularly drawn to projects that not only challenge conventions but also propose innovative, research-driven works that engage with themes of temporality and history. My ideal mentees will bring a broad vision of performance, embracing interdisciplinary methods and bold, conceptual thinking.”
